Aaron

Aaron grew up in an Irish Catholic
neighborhood in the Bronx.
He was probably the only one in his
neighborhood with a "Jewish" name.
I was the only one who wore a
yarmulke (skull cap) in mine.
We both were scrappers in
our younger days.

Friday Hike - Snowmass

Went for a hike with Chuck.
Chuck does not stop or slow down for water,
to take a picture, downhills or uphills.
He does stop for me which I appreciate.
I do slow down for water, to take a picture,
going downhill or uphill.

We went slowly slideways up the shale.

We made great time going down.
Not necessarily going the right way.

I came as a participant, not as a photographer.
I photographed during meals and free time.
The previous blogs “Tania and Pat” (July) and

were taken during meals.

Eating an Egg: Father Thomas Keating

Eating an Egg: Father Thomas Keating

Father Keating's arms wave up, down; the hands flutter, rotate; the fingers grasp, point. I wanted to photograph Father Keating's hands.Photography was not allowed during the group sessions but I could photograph Father Keating outside of sessions.
Problem; Father Keating would arrive right before sessions and leave soon afterwards.  Solution; intrude, with Father  Tom's permission, during breakfast.                                         Father Keating eating an egg.

I'm hoping this blog encourages participants from
the Snowmass InterSpiritual Conference
to contribute their thoughts.
I told Aaron, "I wish I could speak with my photos."
I've said my piece, please say yours.

The good 1950’s and first blooms

It's April 22, snowing and my orchid has opened its first bloom

Young Chuck Berry playin “Sweet Sixteen” in the good part of the 50’s.  It’s eve at “Jazz on a Summer's Day”, the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival directed by Bert Stern (same Bert Stern who photographed Marylin Monroe..  A guy is smoking a cigarette while playing Bach on his Cello.  I’ve seen Thelonious Monk and Anita O'Day.  There’s a flat topped Gerry Mulligan, blowin West Coast Cool.  I know him as a bearded baritone sax player.  And Big Maybelle is singing “all night long” and I’m thinking, that IS a big woman to be doin it all night long!  Haven‘t got to Satchmo yet.  I’m kvelling almost as much as if I was watching the 50’s/ 60’s Yankees when they were young and so was I.  It’s 4-22-13 snowing in Denver and my orchid has opened it’s first bloom!
As always, comments on the blog are appreciated.

Does this photo say anything to you?

Does this photo say anything to you?

Can a photo carry it’s own weight without a story or backstory?  Even painters supply a backstory.  In “The Songlines” by Bruce Chatwin” an aboriginal painter has to tell a story about his work to a prospective buyer to cement the sale of his painting.  At a show of Life magazine photographs, I was asked which photograph speaks to me, meaning does an image bring out a personal back story.  Here is a photo of my friend Michael Cohen.  We could back story, front story, 2nd story you till the cows come home, the fat lady sings and it’s too dark at night to see the ball anymore and it’s time for everyone to quit playin ball, quit bullshitting and head home.
There wuz all kinda stuff happenin during our visit.  "Don’t tell me you never heard about"…but I’m not gonna tell ya that one.  Instead, I’ll ask “does this photo say anything to you?”

Kids these days.
Back in my day, we used to ….(insert your own idealized memories).   Whatever we were back then (I don’t know about you but I was awesome – not everyone agreed with my assessment), we grew into who we are now.  I created this poster for his Bar Mitzvah.  The photograph was taken during a visit of grandchildren to their grandfather –my stepfather.  The skateboarding appliqué on the tee shirt
was photographed in my studio.  I have photographed
many “attitudinal” teenagers but this was my most challenging shoot!
I’m wondering if he sees his personality in this photo.  What is his perspective on his 13 year old persona?  When he sees other 13 year olds, does he think, ”kids these days?”  Looking back, what is your perspective on your youth?

Meetups and Firemen

         Meetups and Firemen

I met Krista at a Co-Wellness meetup. Krista is a chiropractor treating people for about thought, movement and food. She offered to cross-fit train me, gratis. That’s me, above, in the yellow after a workout.  When I learned Krista’s close friend was being promoted to captain in the Denver Fire Department, I had an opportunity to return the favor. My ROI from meetups in terms of support and education has been substantial.

Please feel free to comment

"The Big Picture " event redux

"The Big Picture " event redux
The photo selected for "The Big Picture " event in March was
a flower photo that adorns the cover of  "Found Flowers."
Photos for "The Big Picture "
                               event are displayed outdoors throughout
the city.  So I included more street themed photos.
Below is "Chalk Art in an Hour."
I volunteered for the Mizel Museum to give out flyers
while an artist produced an artistic chalk rendering.
NO Artist.  Everywhere I look, artists are chalking
from renderings and layouts, planning on spending all
day or weekend to produce something amazing.
I'm here for an hour before heading up to Boulder
so I grab some chalk and go for it.
I recruit kids and their grateful parents are snapping away
and staff is politely inviting the kids to go the designated kid's art area.
OK.  One of Mizel Museum's themes is "raise the sparks."
So there we are; "Chalk Art in an Hour."

Positively 4th St Photos

2-13-13
4th st Rodin
I have submitted some photographs for an upcoming photographic event.
My work has been exhibited as one man shows in local galleries but it’s the first time
I’ve submitted work for a group show.  “4th St Rodin” was taken in a playground in the village
in New York on, you guessed it, 4th st.  Space is tight in NYC and the handball court was no
exception.  So I was standing about 2 inches from the foul line of the single wall as ballplayers
are wacking the ball hard and fast.  This was during my 5 month stint on crutches
(I tore my Achilles tendon playing handball) so it was tough to dodge errant balls.

I had gone to the village after visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art and
wandering down a long hallway filled with Rodin sculptures, amazing.
This sculpted handball player was positively like a moving Rodin sculpture.
What do you think?

4th st basketball
Same schoolyard, same tight quarters.  If it looks like the basketball is
inches from the lense, that’s because it is.  Many photographers like to
shoot from a distance.  I like to get in close.  Shooting from a distance feels
removed and nonintuitive.  Up close, the sense of immediacy allows me to
shoot more by feel.  The wide angle view takes in more of the scene.
The original photo was in color but all submissions were black and white.
What feeling do you get from the color image?

4th st outsider
This was taken outside the fence a
few frames after the basketball photograph.
