Dirty Street Cripples

Not the name of an indie rock group. This appellation was used by someone in the establishment disability world describing grassroots activists (I'm just the messenger here). These Dirty Street Cripples were pushing congressional legislation to protect those who couldn't help themselves and to give people with disabilities better lives. This includes people who are warehoused in nursing homes, as well as thoughtful articulate people whose limitations keep them from going out in the world. Why is she smiling? I didn't ask her to have a serious face to create a more impactful photographic. I'm just the messenger. This is someone who enjoys life and being in this world.

Hangology and Creativity: David Amram at the Merc

So I'm standing outside in the coldy cold cold, rapping and riffing with this white goateed cool cat talking about jazz shows and catching the old cats as they come through town.

I told him that I saw David Amram and he was like "he's so great and the last couple years I haven't caught the birthday celebrations." I'm thinking "hey I was glad to catch this one and to catch Amram at El Chapultepec about 10+ years ago for the celebration of Jack Kerouac's 'On the Road' 50th anniversary." And me and Hilary were BFF's with Cassady's ex, Catherine, during the show, sitting in the front booth like VIP's, almost.

Amram playing 2 penny whistles. Didja know he taught Rahsan Roland Kirk howta
play two saxes at a time? didja?

And he's telling me about Pat Metheny and I'm talkin about the "Return to Forever" reunion at the Paramount where I spur moment picked up a face value ticket outside and saw CC, Chick Corea plucking on the inside strings of the piano and he said" yeah man he does that" and then it was like "hey man it's really cold out here, I gotta go."

Havin his own 'percussion discussion' w trumpeter, Amram playin a French Horn and oobyoobliying ooblyoodee ay! (any you guys know "Percussion Discussion" by MR, Max Roach and CM Charlse Mingus? or a moderne version by HH,Herbie Hancock and BC Billy Cobham w thousands of thousanths of second spaces and I can still follow the dots....sorta..)

Jack
K didn't hear jazz till 1947 when Neal hipped him as Amram played long sentences singing Jack's histories...
“On the Road' 9th version was Jack K drinkin coffee not benzedrine.... Like Mozart. straight out.
Jellow Biafra ranting and raving about HS Guidance counselors and Trump.
Neal Cassidy's son reading his own short story about target practice in the living room, shooting Collier's Encyclopedia.
KGNU cat reading a Neal Cassidy short story (maybe it was a Kerouac?)

Amram played Wody Guthrie's Pasture of Plenty in jazz ballady blues
(who'd a thunk it? Not me).

Last tune Charlie Parker..music..not bebop or labeled. playing, singing, riffing and raffing stories, songs and music in the key of life..

with emphasis on Joy

Saw Don Byron at Dazzle 6pm early show.  Good view, great music.  Don played an Eddie Harris tune. I dint recognize the tune but was thrilled to hear it.  Last week I heard a new piece on KUVO by the sax player for Saturday Night Live and dang if he wasn't doing
Eddie Harris style Cold Duck for the first 1/2 of the tune.  I miss my Silver Cycles Eddie Harris record. Don't have a record player. Saw him first time on a NYC Sunday Jazz show hosted by a priest in late 60's. Caught him again at El Chapultapec in Denver when you could get $2.00 burritos there.
I gave Don Byron a rubber chicken ( I bought it to bring to Jewish weddings later this summer, in honor of Leo Cohen and Phil Glass) in recognition of his Micky Katz album

where he is holding.. a rubber chicken.

No klezmer music or gospel, but he did sing St Louis Blues with some yodel flourishes.
And he played a tune about "the thing," the thing" you don't talk about in relationships; money.. sex.. mother in laws. Toward the end of that tune he played a little Beatle's "Nowhere Man."  Good commentary. Good show.
