Saw Don Byron at Dazzle 6pm early show. Good view, great music. Don played an Eddie Harris tune. I dint recognize the tune but was thrilled to hear it. Last week I heard a new piece on KUVO by the sax player for Saturday Night Live and dang if he wasn't doing
Eddie Harris style Cold Duck for the first 1/2 of the tune. I miss my Silver Cycles Eddie Harris record. Don't have a record player. Saw him first time on a NYC Sunday Jazz show hosted by a priest in late 60's. Caught him again at El Chapultapec in Denver when you could get $2.00 burritos there.
I gave Don Byron a rubber chicken ( I bought it to bring to Jewish weddings later this summer, in honor of Leo Cohen and Phil Glass) in recognition of his Micky Katz album
where he is holding.. a rubber chicken.
No klezmer music or gospel, but he did sing St Louis Blues with some yodel flourishes.
And he played a tune about "the thing," the thing" you don't talk about in relationships; money.. sex.. mother in laws. Toward the end of that tune he played a little Beatle's "Nowhere Man." Good commentary. Good show.
