The good 1950’s and first blooms

It's April 22, snowing and my orchid has opened its first bloom

Young Chuck Berry playin “Sweet Sixteen” in the good part of the 50’s.  It’s eve at “Jazz on a Summer's Day”, the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival directed by Bert Stern (same Bert Stern who photographed Marylin Monroe..  A guy is smoking a cigarette while playing Bach on his Cello.  I’ve seen Thelonious Monk and Anita O'Day.  There’s a flat topped Gerry Mulligan, blowin West Coast Cool.  I know him as a bearded baritone sax player.  And Big Maybelle is singing “all night long” and I’m thinking, that IS a big woman to be doin it all night long!  Haven‘t got to Satchmo yet.  I’m kvelling almost as much as if I was watching the 50’s/ 60’s Yankees when they were young and so was I.  It’s 4-22-13 snowing in Denver and my orchid has opened it’s first bloom!
As always, comments on the blog are appreciated.

Does this photo say anything to you?

Does this photo say anything to you?

Can a photo carry it’s own weight without a story or backstory?  Even painters supply a backstory.  In “The Songlines” by Bruce Chatwin” an aboriginal painter has to tell a story about his work to a prospective buyer to cement the sale of his painting.  At a show of Life magazine photographs, I was asked which photograph speaks to me, meaning does an image bring out a personal back story.  Here is a photo of my friend Michael Cohen.  We could back story, front story, 2nd story you till the cows come home, the fat lady sings and it’s too dark at night to see the ball anymore and it’s time for everyone to quit playin ball, quit bullshitting and head home.
There wuz all kinda stuff happenin during our visit.  "Don’t tell me you never heard about"…but I’m not gonna tell ya that one.  Instead, I’ll ask “does this photo say anything to you?”
Feel Free to comment.
